Kandy Schools

Help them Play!

This school is situated at central province in Sri Lanka.
This was owned by the government, five years ago and they closed it down because they were not able to support it financially. Two years later the monk from the village temple found out that poor village children were not going to school anymore. The parents of these children do not have enough money to send their children to other schools located far away because bus fair is high and school fees is unaffordable for them. So with some help this monk was able to restart this school again for the poor children in the village. Now after four years the school has 64 children, and all of them are from a very poor family background. The parents are farmers of the small lands. Now they do not have to pay school fees. There are six highly dedicated teachers who work on a very low salary paid by the government.
These children have very little facilities for their education. And since they come from poor families, their parents are not able to support them with basic facilities needed for school such as school shoes, uniforms, books and other essential educational needs.

PROJECT “ADOPT A CHILD”
Why did we started this separate project?
Well, this primary school named Wettewa junior school is a very poor countryside school. The children here are never going anywhere as the parents can’t afford the costs. Many parents can’t even afford shoes for their children.
The teachers asked if we could help. We said we couldn’t do this from the sponsors money but we could try to set up another programme….and that is this here.

We ask people to donate 50 euro a year and from that money we will buy what they need for school.

How are we going to do this?

My good friend Ramani is leading this project. She will go with the children to the shop and buy what is needed. No money is given to the parents at all.!!!!!

What are we going to buy?

To answer this correctly I need to tell you what schools and parents receive from the government
1- schools get their text books from the government
2- each child will get material for an uniform once a year
3- 18 rupees ( around 10 eurocent) is given to each school for each child per day
Normally the school will take on a mum who will cook for all the children of the school. This means that at least once a day children get a proper meal. The mum will earn some money with it as well.

Coming back to what are we going to buy of those 50 euro I can say the following;

1- 2 pair of shoes (2000 rupees) is around 13 euro
2- 4 pair of socks (1000 rupees) is around 6,50
3- Pens, pencils, exercise books, drawing books etc. (27.000 rupees )
is around 15,00 euro those items are not provided by school.
4- material for one more uniform and a tailor to sew those 2 uniforms (1500

If you would like to sponsor you would help us immensely . Of course there is a possibility to stop each year if necessary.

If you wish to have a connection with the children you support or if you wish to visit them and their school, we are most willing to arrange it for you.

Have a look at the children
