Hello my name is Natasja. I am a primary school teacher in Heemstede, the Netherlands and have been travelling regularly to Sri Lanka to visit and distribute educational materials, toys, clothing and other goods to nursery schools around the Kandy area.
This all started three years ago when I went to visit Sri Lanka for the first time. Knowing Sri Lanka was a poor country, I decided to bring some extra things with me to give away. I donated those items to Lewella, a home for mentally retarded boys located in Kandy. In the years that followed, friends would give me used clothes and shoes to take along. Most recently, the primary school The Ark in Heemstede, where I am a teacher, has agreed to support Lewella for two years. There are collection boxes in each classroom and parents donate used summer clothing and toys.
This project has grown and my goal now is to help as many nursery schools in Kandy and the surrounding area as possible. Parents hardly have enough money to pay for a teacher, there let alone the materials that the teacher need to stimulate the children. Often the only things in a room are a few tables and chairs.
